Ethos, Values, and the TIAAS Approach

Myles Academy is an independent special school committed to providing a nurturing, individualized educational experience for students with Special Educational Needs (SEN), including those with EHCPs, ASD, and social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs.

Core Ethos and Values

  • Relationships, Responsibility, Resilience These are the three guiding principles that underpin the academy’s approach, encouraging personal growth and responsibility in a safe learning environment.
  • Unconditional Positive Regard Every student is met each day with empathy and a positive mindset. Staff focus on building trusting relationships and helping students learn from their mistakes without judgment.
  • Personalized Education Recognizing that many students have previously faced barriers to learning, the academy designs tailored educational plans that set ambitious but realistic goals, both academically and socially.
  • Holistic Development The school places a strong emphasis on personal, social, and employability skills, preparing students not just for exams but for life beyond school, including further education, training, and employment.
  • Safe and Nurturing Environment The academy offers a structured, supportive setting that helps students re-engage with education, develop confidence, and feel secure.

Trauma-Informed and Attachment-Aware School (TIAAS) Approach

  • Myles Academy is proud to be a Gold Standard Trauma-Informed, Attachment-Aware School, which deeply informs its day-to-day practices:
  • Emotion Coaching & PACE Model All staff are trained in Emotion Coaching and the PACE approach (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, Empathy), fostering strong, emotionally secure relationships between staff and students.
  • Nurture-Based and Relational Practice The school prioritizes relational over punitive approaches. Clear rules and boundaries are delivered with compassion, promoting emotional regulation and positive behavior.
  • Understanding of Trauma & Attachment Staff are trained to recognize the signs of trauma and attachment issues and adapt their teaching and support strategies accordingly, ensuring every child feels safe and valued.

Together, this ethos and TIAAS approach create an environment where students can heal, grow, and thrive, both personally and academically.
